Wink taught me to play guitar in 1991 just as he taught many of us Louisvillians to play our instruments. My band Juanita, which I've played in since New Year's Eve 1992, I'm pretty sure was his brainchild. Our first configuration included his partner Theresa (on drums) and her sister Becky (on sax and vocals). I knew back in the day that although I was terrified to play on stage, it sure was fun. I know now that Juanita has been an integral part of my identity and I will always be grateful to Wink for this gift. Over the years we've had roughly 45 different people play in our band. To me Juanita represents one of the great things about Louisville: our musical community. We have leaned on one another through the loss of friends and family and we have supported one another in happy times too. Thankfully Wink was there to hear us play on February 21st at Wink Aid. I didn't talk to him that night but I know he was proud of how much we kicked ass. Rest In Peace dear Wink. You are missed.

I joined Juanita as a guitar player. I had been wanting to come out from behind the drum set.
A year or so later, I moved to drums when Theresa left (ending up behind the drum set again).
For this Juanita cover, of "Crystal Blue Persuasion," I was able to play guitar again in Juanita, utilizing a 1st position scale, Wink O'Bannon had taught me.
I could wax poetic about Wink and his guitar adventures, in multiple bands, but the life lessons he taught me were tough love words, berated into my skull, like a coach yells at his team.
I always considered Wink a musical guru, or coach, and in my world, only my guru /coach, can yell at me like that and get away with it.
I walked away from every conversation I ever had with Wink, having learned meaningful truths, I knew not before. Grant it, usually, he was bartending and I was drinking. We bonded over Guinness beer and legitimate guitar gods. R.I.P. Wink O'Bannon.

Me and my friend used to go on drives all the time, and a lot of the time i asked what he was playing, and a majority of the songs were from Yo La Tengo. And since i went and listened to And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out i was fan. Never thought i’d buy one of their records for myself. violetstain
