To use a well-worn cliché, Wink O’Bannon (who was no damned cliché, buddy) was like a brother to me. He got me, and I got him. Both of us were Moon Children and possessed those typical qualities of the sign. Many times he stepped in to threaten someone (Watch out buddy) on my behalf who he thought had overstepped their bounds. He was moody too, and surly, but like I said, I “got” him and that was never an issue. I found him to be a sweetheart of a man who appreciated a good joke and good friends.
Some of the best moments of my life were spent with him about ten feet away from me on a stage (or back-to-back like rockers do when they rock!). If you were watching me (why would you when he was playing), you would notice my smile. I was in awe of what Wink could do with that guitar, and it just filled me with joy to be there on stage with him. He made me better and took me with him on some of those wild rides. Despite our shared musical tastes, we were guitar opposites—me, the technically deficient idiot who found his way around the neck through intuition and Wink, who could rifle through scales with the best of them, like Keith, Chuck or Fred “Sonic” Smith. Wink had another gear though, and channeled cosmic chaos to blow the roof off any place we were playing.
Wink came into my life in a big way in 1988 when Janet brought him in to mix our Prairie School Freakout record. He captured the essence of the band on that record by letting us be who we were. He was the fifth member. Then, he toured with us as a roadie until he joined the band for real mid-tour on Lived to Tell.
Wink was one-of-a-kind--a renaissance man if there ever was one. Smarter and more talented than most, but humble to the bone. And I loved him. Legend.

Me and my friend used to go on drives all the time, and a lot of the time i asked what he was playing, and a majority of the songs were from Yo La Tengo. And since i went and listened to And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out i was fan. Never thought i’d buy one of their records for myself. violetstain

Long-form trance-y rhythmic jams, with a fun shambling edge, sounding like a cross between music from Africa's Sahel region crossed with a Tom Waits instrumental... Jascha Narveson
