When punk rock first swam into my field of vision, the most thrilling aspect of it was that people in my hometown of Louisville, Kentucky had already released a handful of records that I took to instantly—Endtables, Babylon Dance Band, Blinders—and man did I listen to those seven inches over and over and over again. For a music heralded as denuded of guitar heroics, a common thread among these groups were the thrills and chills provided by, respectively, Alex Durig, Tara Key, and Wink O’Bannon. In spite of years of seeing him in a range of bands—his playing in Bodeco in particular reliably fabulous—I always heard in Wink’s guitar the qualities that made the Blinders’ “Can’t Sit Down” such a kick. The last time I saw Wink he was tending bar at Seidenfaden’s and I couldn’t begin to follow the conversation with friends because Wink was at the YouTube controls and I wanted in on the master class he was silently conducting with King Curtis, Big Joe Turner, Slim Gaillard, and an endless series of treasures. Wink the Wellspring.

Me and my friend used to go on drives all the time, and a lot of the time i asked what he was playing, and a majority of the songs were from Yo La Tengo. And since i went and listened to And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out i was fan. Never thought i’d buy one of their records for myself. violetstain

Long-form trance-y rhythmic jams, with a fun shambling edge, sounding like a cross between music from Africa's Sahel region crossed with a Tom Waits instrumental... Jascha Narveson
